Why We Spend Summers in the Northeast

As many of you know, our photography business began in the Northeast. Western New York was our home base, but over the years we found ourselves traveling throughout the region for family photography sessions and weddings.

While we now spend the majority of our time in Southwest Florida, there’s something special about summers and early fall in the Northeast that continues to draw us back. Trading palm trees and sandy beaches for rolling hills, evergreen forests, and open fields feels like returning to where it all started.

We began raising our family in the North, and I’ve always felt a deep connection to families who call this region home. The landscapes, the foliage, the slower pace of summer evenings, it all carries a sense of familiarity and warmth for me.

That connection is why we continue to offer Northeast family photography sessions each summer.

Last summer, I had the opportunity to photograph this family in Vermont. This session was photographed on film, my primary medium for documenting families and couples. If you’d like to learn more about why I choose to shoot film, you can read more here.

INQUIRE ABOUT A FAMILY SESSION

A Recent Vermont Family Session

Last summer, I traveled to Vermont for a family session about an hour outside of Burlington. We photographed the session at the family’s home, surrounded by trees, rolling hills, and a quiet walking path that led to a nearby pond.

One of the beautiful aspects of photographing families in the Northeast is the quality of the light. Unlike the stronger beach light in Florida, summer light up north tends to feel softer and more forgiving. Sessions can begin earlier in the evening, and there is almost always a natural pocket of shade available, even on sunny days.

Summer days are also longer in the Northeast, giving us more flexibility in timing. That extended daylight is especially helpful for families with young children, like this one, allowing us to plan around naps and bedtime without feeling rushed.

Why Summer Is Ideal for Family Photos in the Northeast

There’s a reason so many families love summers up north. Evenings are cooler, the greenery is lush, and towns feel alive with visitors and community events. It’s a season that naturally invites families to spend time outdoors together.

While fall in the Northeast is undeniably beautiful, it can also be unpredictable. Rain is more common, and temperatures often drop quickly, which can make outdoor sessions challenging for young children who need to stay bundled up.

In contrast, summer offers warmth without the intensity of southern heat, making it an ideal season for relaxed outdoor family photography.

Whether you’re surrounded by the mountains of the Adirondacks, enjoying the coastal charm of New England, or walking past blooming hydrangeas in a seaside town, the Northeast is one of my favorite places to photograph families during the summer months.

Where We Are Traveling Summer 2026 / Fall 2026

Each summer, we take a road trip through the Northeast, making extended stops in several regions we’ve grown to love over the years. Our travels usually include the Savannah area, Northern VA, and Western New York. New England Region.  In the past we’ve visited Nantucket, Rhode Island, Woodstock, and areas between.

For this year, our confirmed travel dates are:

  • Northern VA / Washington, DC: June 7-11 / July 29-August 3 / October 2-6

  • Western New York: June 15- July 2 / July 13 – July 24

  • Livingston Manor / Saugarties, NY: October 20 – October 24

If you’re located in or near any of these areas and would like to plan a family session while we’re in town, I’d love to coordinate a date with you.

Travel sessions are limited each summer and are typically scheduled around our existing route, so reaching out early is always encouraged.

How Travel Sessions Work

Summer travel dates are limited, but I do my best to coordinate sessions thoughtfully around both my family’s schedule and the families I photograph.

Please note I charge a travel fee for a destination further than 20 miles from my home base of any of these locations.

To make the most of our time in each region, I prioritize grouping sessions geographically. If you have friends or neighbors who may also be interested in booking family photos while I’m in town, planning together can help secure availability and streamline scheduling.

If you’re located in the Northeast and would love to plan a summer family session while we’re in your area, reach out and we can coordinate a date that aligns with our travel schedule.
