You Don’t Need Little Kids to Book Family Photos

Many parents assume family photos are something you do during the toddler years, when kids are small, and milestones feel obvious. But you don’t need little children to book a meaningful family session. The teenage years are just as important, and in many ways, even more fleeting.

As children grow older, schedules become fuller. Between school, sports, part-time jobs, and social lives, it can feel harder and harder to gather everyone in one place. Family vacations are often one of the few times each year when everyone truly slows down and reconnects.

This particular family vacations in Marco Island every year, and this was their very first professional family session. They wanted a location that felt peaceful and a little more secluded, so we chose Tigertail Beach in Marco Island.

Tigertail is beautiful year-round, with wide open shoreline and natural dunes that feel quiet and expansive. It does require about a mile walk from the parking area to reach the beach, which can be challenging with very young children. But for families with older kids or teenagers, that short hike creates the perfect setting for relaxed, uncrowded beach photos.

This session was photographed on film, my primary medium for documenting families and couples. If you’re curious why I choose film, you can read more here.

INQUIRE ABOUT A FAMILY SESSION

Why the Teenage Years Are Worth Documenting

This stage of life is just as important to document as the toddler years.

High school goes by quickly. College arrives sooner than expected. And before we know it, our kids are stepping fully into adulthood. It’s easy for these later years to pass with less documentation simply because life becomes busy.

Why not capture this season while everyone is still under one roof?

If you’re visiting Marco Island with older children, Tigertail Beach is an incredible option. As mentioned, the walk from the parking lot to the shoreline takes about 15 minutes, but along the way, you pass beautiful natural landscapes that create stunning backdrops for photos before we even reach the beach.

Because of that short walk, Tigertail tends to feel more peaceful and less crowded. That quieter atmosphere is especially helpful for teenagers (and parents) who may feel self-conscious with large crowds watching. The open space allows everyone to relax and be themselves.

It’s one of the reasons I love photographing Marco Island family sessions here.

I also genuinely enjoy working with teenagers. While the prompts and direction I use are different than what I might use with toddlers, the results are just as meaningful. Teens are often able to settle in quickly, connect naturally, and stay engaged throughout the session, which allows us to move efficiently and capture a wonderful variety of images.

You don’t need toddlers to justify booking family photos.

You just need this season — exactly as it is.

What to Wear for Family Photos with Teenagers at Tigertail Beach

When photographing families with older kids, I often recommend slightly more elevated, coordinated outfits. Teenagers tend to appreciate clothing that feels natural and age-appropriate rather than overly styled or overly “matchy.”

Soft neutrals photograph beautifully against the sand and dunes at Tigertail Beach, think creams, soft blues, sage greens, muted blush, and light gray tones. Avoid dressing everyone in the exact same color. Instead, choose a cohesive color palette and let each person’s personality show within it.

Flowy dresses, linen shirts, lightweight fabrics, and simple silhouettes work especially well at sunset. The goal is relaxed but polished, something that feels comfortable enough to move and walk naturally along the shoreline.

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help coordinate outfits before your Marco Island family session.

Family photos aren’t about the age of your children, they’re about preserving the season you’re in. Whether your kids are toddlers or teenagers, the time together matters. If you’re visiting Marco Island and considering documenting this stage of life, Tigertail Beach offers the perfect setting to slow down, connect, and capture it beautifully.
