Why Naples is Perfect for Extended Family Photos

When families begin planning extended family beach photos in Naples, FL, it’s usually because this destination brings everyone together in one beautiful place. Few locations offer the combination of warm weather, stunning Gulf sunsets, and a relaxed vacation atmosphere quite like Naples.

During the holidays and spring break, especially, Naples becomes the perfect meeting point for multiple generations. Many grandparents either live here full-time or spend their winters in Southwest Florida, making it an easy and natural gathering spot for children and grandchildren.

What makes Naples truly special is that it appeals to every generation. Grandparents appreciate the mild winter climate and walkable coastal lifestyle. Young kids love the calm Gulf waters, wide sandy beaches, and outdoor parks. Parents enjoy the slower pace and the chance to genuinely unwind together.

When everyone is relaxed, together, and surrounded by beautiful scenery, it creates the ideal setting for extended family photos that feel natural and meaningful.

This session was photographed on film, my primary medium for documenting families and couples. If you’re curious why I choose film, you can read more here.

INQUIRE ABOUT AN EXTENDED FAMILY SESSION

When Is the Best Time to Schedule Extended Family Photos in Naples?

If you’re wondering when the best time for extended family beach photos in Naples, FL is, the short answer is: whenever it works for everyone. Coordinating multiple households can be the biggest challenge, so flexibility matters.

That said, there are a few important factors to consider.

Morning Sessions: Calm, Beautiful, and Underrated

Morning beach sessions are often much less crowded, especially during busy seasons like holidays and spring break. The light is soft and clean, and young children tend to be happiest earlier in the day.

While you won’t get the golden glow of sunset, Naples mornings offer their own beautiful, airy look that photographs wonderfully. For families with toddlers or grandparents who prefer not to be out late, mornings can be an ideal choice.

Sunset Sessions: The Classic Naples Look

If sunset is a must, timing becomes more important.

The most flattering beach light happens during the final 20–30 minutes before sunset. Because of that, we plan strategically. I typically begin sessions about 60 minutes before sunset, using the first portion of time in a shaded green space nearby. This allows us to photograph smaller groupings and candid moments without feeling rushed.

Then, during the final golden moments, we move onto the beach for those glowing sunset portraits. After the sun dips below the horizon, there’s often an additional 10–15 minutes of soft afterglow that creates a beautiful pastel sky.

For sunset sessions, I strongly recommend booking mid-week when possible. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends, which helps make large family sessions feel calmer and more relaxed.

Considering a Park Instead of the Beach

If working within that sunset window feels stressful, especially with a large group, a Naples park can be a wonderful alternative.

Parks provide:

  • More shade

  • Ample space for large groupings

  • Easier parking

  • More flexibility with start times

For example, if sunset is at 6:30 PM, a beach session would typically begin around 5:30 PM. A park session, however, could comfortably begin around 4:45 PM and still offer beautiful light, often wrapping up earlier as well.

Both options create beautiful results. The key is choosing what works best for your family’s energy and schedule.

Choosing the Right Beach in Naples for Extended Family Photos

Naples offers a variety of beautiful beaches that work well for extended family sessions. The best location ultimately depends on where you’re staying and what kind of experience you’re looking for.

Staying at The Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons?

If you’re staying at either the The Ritz-Carlton Naples or the Four Seasons Resort Naples, you’re in luck. Both properties provide convenient beach access along with shaded areas nearby,  which is ideal for large family sessions. We can easily photograph in greenery first and then move to the beach for sunset portraits without needing to relocate.

Not Staying Beachfront?

No problem at all.

If you have a Collier County beach parking pass, that opens up several convenient public beach entrances throughout downtown Naples.

If you don’t have a pass, there are still excellent public options that combine green space and beach access within a short walking distance. Locations like Loudermilk Park work beautifully for large groups, offering parking, shade, and wide sandy beaches.

Another favorite option is parking near 3rd Avenue South and walking to one of the nearby beach entrances. The charming alleyways and architecture along the way provide a gorgeous variety of backdrops before we even step onto the sand.

What to Wear for Extended Family Beach Photos

Coordinating outfits for a large group can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

Neutral and soft tones photograph beautifully on the beach, think creams, soft blues, sage greens, muted blush, and light grays. I recommend blending colors rather than matching exactly. When everyone wears the same shade (for example, all white), it can visually flatten the image and make it harder to distinguish individuals in large group photos.

The goal is coordination without uniformity.

What to Expect During Your Session

With extended families, efficiency matters.

Before focusing exclusively on family photography, I spent over 15 years photographing weddings. I bring that same organized, systematic approach to large family sessions.

We typically:

  • Start with the largest group first

  • Break down into smaller family units

  • Capture grandparents with grandchildren

  • Photograph sibling groups

  • End with immediate family portraits and candids

This ensures everyone receives meaningful images, both of the entire extended family and of their individual households.

You can also expect a blend of posed portraits and natural, candid moments. My goal is to document your time together in a way that feels both timeless and genuine.

At the end of the day, these are your memories. I want you to walk away with a full collection that reflects the joy, connection, and personality of your family.

A Final Thought

Extended family vacations don’t happen every year.

Capturing grandparents, siblings, and cousins together — all in one frame — becomes something you’ll treasure long after the trip ends.
