Planning Family Photos While Staying at JW Marriott Marco Island
If you’re planning a trip to the JW Marriott Marco Island and considering scheduling family photos during your stay, you’re not alone. Many visiting families choose to document their vacation while everyone is relaxed, present, and together.
This recent JW Marriott Marco Island family photos session featured a family of five with three children ages 2–7. It’s a perfect example of what a sunset beach session at the resort can look like, playful, natural, and beautifully lit along the Gulf shoreline.
This session was photographed on film, my primary medium for documenting families and couples. If you’re curious why I choose to shoot film, you can read more here.

Why the JW Marriott Marco Island Is Perfect for Family Beach Photos
When planning a family session, I always say the simpler the plan, the better, especially when little ones are involved.
What could be easier than stepping off the elevator, walking through the lobby, and having your family session right on site at the JW Marriott Marco Island? There’s no driving, no searching for parking, and no added logistics. You simply walk out the back of the resort into beautifully landscaped grounds where palm trees sway in the breeze and the beach is just steps away.
If you’ve stayed at the JW Marriott in Marco Island, you know the shoreline is wide and pristine, a stunning backdrop at sunset. That said, the beach light can be a bit harsh earlier in the evening. One of the advantages of shooting at the resort is the ability to begin in the lush, shaded areas on property. The greenery provides soft, flattering light, allowing us to capture a variety of images before heading out to the sand.
For this reason, I typically plan to meet in the lobby about 60 minutes before sunset. We spend the first 30–40 minutes photographing around the hotel grounds, then head to the beach for the final 20–30 minutes when the light is warm, diffused, and incredibly flattering. After the sun dips below the horizon, there’s often an additional 10 minutes of soft afterglow that creates beautiful pastel skies.
What a Session Looks Like with Young Kids
When photographing young children, I’ve found it works best to let them help guide the flow of the session. Rather than forcing rigid poses, I focus on creating an environment where kids feel comfortable and engaged from the start.
Once children feel involved and at ease, the session naturally comes together.
I use movement-based prompts instead of stiff posing. Walking, twirling, playing in the sand, and interacting with mom and dad all create moments that feel genuine rather than staged. Because I’m not aiming for perfectly posed images, children tend to relax quickly and let their personalities shine.
Transitions between groupings are kept light and efficient so there’s never too much downtime. The goal is to keep energy moving and make the experience feel fun rather than like a “sit here and smile” photo session.
By keeping things natural and playful, families often leave saying the hour flew by — and the images reflect that relaxed, joyful atmosphere.

What to Wear for Family Photos at JW Marriott Marco Island
I always recommend wearing what feels most like you. If your family leans toward a more casual, minimal aesthetic, embrace that. If you prefer something slightly more elevated, that works beautifully too. The goal is to feel comfortable and confident, because that always translates in photos.
For beach sessions at the JW Marriott Marco Island, soft neutrals and coastal tones tend to photograph especially well against the sand and Gulf backdrop. Lightweight fabrics, natural textures, and simple silhouettes allow the focus to remain on connection rather than clothing.

Why Vacation Is the Perfect Time for Family Photos
Vacation is one of the few times each year when families truly slow down. There are no early morning school rushes, no packed schedules, and no competing work obligations, just time together.
Everyone tends to be more relaxed on vacation. Parents aren’t juggling daily responsibilities, and kids are free to simply enjoy being present. That relaxed energy translates beautifully into photographs.
Children grow quickly, and many families intentionally plan vacations while their kids are still young. Documenting those trips becomes part of preserving that season of life, not just the destination, but the connection you share as a family during that time.
If you’re planning a stay at the JW Marriott Marco Island and would like to schedule family photos during your trip, I’d love to help you document your time together.
