Morning vs Sunset Family Photos in Naples, FL

One of the most common questions I get when families are planning a session is whether they should choose a morning or sunset time. The truth is, both can be beautiful, but they offer very different experiences depending on your family, your schedule, and the type of session you’re hoping for.

If you’re still deciding on a location, you can also read my guide on the best beaches in Naples for family photos here to help narrow that down first.

INQUIRE ABOUT A FAMILY SESSION

Why I Often Recommend Morning Sessions

While sunset is the most popular choice, I’m actually a big fan of morning sessions, especially when the timing works well for your family.

One of the biggest advantages is how quiet the beaches are. During a typical morning session, you might only see a handful of people the entire time. That creates a much more relaxed environment, especially for families who prefer a quieter setting or want clean, uncluttered backgrounds in their images.

Mornings also tend to work beautifully for young kids. Everyone is well-rested, there’s no need to work around nap schedules, and you can head to breakfast afterward instead of worrying about dinner timing or late evenings.

From a lighting standpoint, mornings offer soft, even light that is very flattering and consistent. Unlike sunset, where the best light comes in a short window, mornings give us more flexibility, especially depending on the location.

My Favorite Morning Location: The Moorings

If we plan your session at one of the beach access points in the Moorings, mornings become even more ideal.

This area has high-rise condos along the shoreline that naturally shade the beach for the first 60–90 minutes after sunrise. That shade creates soft, diffused light while still giving you a clean beach backdrop.

Because of that, we don’t need to rush.

  • We can start the session about 30 minutes after sunrise
  • And still have a full 60 minutes to photograph comfortably

For extended families, this location is especially helpful. The shaded beach provides space for larger groups, and with very few people around, we can photograph multiple combinations without distractions in the background.  If you want to read more on planning an extended family session you can read my guide here.

Parking is also simple and reliable in the morning, with public pay stations available, no stress about lots filling up.

Sunrise Timing in Naples

To give you a general idea of timing:

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Sunrise is around 7:00–7:15 AM
  • Spring (March–April): Around 6:30–7:00 AM
  • Summer (June–July): Around 6:30 AM

For most Moorings sessions, we would plan to begin roughly 30 minutes after sunrise.

If we choose a different beach closer to downtown Naples or Third Street, we typically need to start right at sunrise, and we’ll have about 30–40 minutes before the light becomes too strong.

Why Sunset Sessions Are Still Worth It

Sunset sessions are popular for a reason; they are absolutely beautiful.

That said, it’s important to understand how light works on the Gulf side of Florida.

We don’t get a full “golden hour”; we get more like a golden 20 minutes.

And it’s incredible.

The light becomes warm, glowing, and soft right before the sun dips below the horizon, creating that classic beach look most people envision.

Because that window is short, I structure sessions to make the most of it:

  • We typically begin about 60 minutes before sunset
  • Start in a shaded green space for earlier images
  • Then move to the beach for the final 20–30 minutes

This gives you a mix of:

  • soft greenery images
  • and glowing beach sunset portraits

Sunset Timing Throughout the Year

Timing changes quite a bit depending on the season:

  • Summer (June–July): Sunset is around 8:30–9:00 PM
→ Beach photos happen around 8:10–8:40 PM
  • Fall (November): Sunset is around 5:30–5:45 PM (after daylight savings)
→ Beach photos around 5:15 PM, with sessions starting closer to 4:45 PM
  • Winter (February): Sunset is around 6:15 PM
→ Beach photos around 5:50 PM

If earlier evenings are important to your schedule, fall and winter tend to be the most convenient times for sunset sessions.

So Which Should You Choose?

Both options are beautiful; it really comes down to what works best for your family.

Morning sessions are ideal if you:

  • Have young kids who wake up early
  • Want a quieter, less crowded beach
  • Prefer a more relaxed pace
  • Are planning an extended family session (guide for planning an extended family session here)

Sunset sessions are ideal if you:

  • Love that warm, glowing beach light
  • Don’t mind a later evening
  • Want a mix of greenery and beach images

A Thought on Light (and Why It Matters)

Understanding light is one of the most important parts of creating natural, timeless images. Every decision, from location to timing, is based on how the light will interact with your family and the environment.

This is also a big part of why I choose to photograph using both film and digital. Film, in particular, handles natural light in a way that feels soft, balanced, and true to life. If you’d like to learn more about that, you can read about why I choose film photography here.

Final Thoughts

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s a good thing. Whether you choose morning or sunset, the goal is always the same: to create a session that feels relaxed, natural, and true to your family.

If you’re not sure which option makes the most sense for your trip or your group, I’m always happy to help guide you based on your schedule, location, and the kind of experience you’re looking for.
